The idea of exercise seemed so alien I hardly knew where to start. Apart from anything else, I could always find an excuse not to go. I needed to be accountable. I even managed some gentle jogging. Acknowledging, wisely, that I was never going to feel any passion for running and gym work, Anne introduced me to boxercise, and for the first time in my life I found a form of exercise I really enjoyed.

It was a revelation. I discovered, to my delight, that I packed quite a punch. Suddenly I was all about the right hooks and the uppercuts. I bought a skipping rope and dreamt about Million Dollar Baby.

Do what you love When that class was discontinued, I cast around for something else to capture my imagination, and during the next couple of years experimented with every form of exercise I could find. Boot camp came next: an hour of adrenalin-filled, action-packed body pumping that left my quads screaming and my face burning. Then there was tennis, Zumba, salsa, body conditioning, weights, hiking and swimming. Sometimes it was two steps forward, one step back.
